The Studies and Measurements Department analyses the wind power potential for precise sites and elaborates regional and national wind power maps, for La Compagnie du Vent as well as for other companies or institutions. The study of the wind power potential for a given site takes place in two stages. The measurement campaign is led for at least one year on the site to be studied, thanks to a measuring pylon equipped with anemometres, weather vanes, pressure and temperature sensors. This campaign makes it possible to acquire the appropriate data continuously, on a ten minute period basis. Up till now, La Compagnie du Vent has led some one hundred similar studies in France, in the French overseas territories and abroad. The wind power potential of the site is then calculated with the help of aerodynamic simulation softwares, based on the data registered by the measurement campaign, and on the ones coming from the nearest weather station. After having statistically processed all these data, the wind power potential is established (average speeds, vertical speed profile, compass cards…) and the production of each wind turbine of the wind farm is estimated. The regional and national wind power maps are established with GeoWind. GeoWind is a manufacturing process developped by La Compagnie du Vent in order to register full and precise wind data on a given territory. This information is then read and processed by a software application in order to analyse the wind power potential of the studied area. GeoWind, which is part of the SIG ArcView platform, is a real decision-making help tool used by numerous participants in the French wind power branch. In that way, La Compagnie du Vent has already created wind power maps for the regions of Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Haute-Normandie, Picardie, Corsica, Aquitaine and for the French Guiana coastline and Martinique. |
